May Newsletter

Hola!

Well, here we are in May.  Happy 6 years TBI.  What a freaking year we’ve had, always so thankful of the support and always so inspired by all of you.  I am at a loss for words and even trying to grasp everything that has happened in the past 6 years seems so overwhelming.  I just take things day by day and continue to try to do the best i can as a coach and business owner in a seemingly never ending quest for perfection.  thank you all for everything and for having faith in me.

Year One/TBI Kintsugi:

I’m sure many of you already forgot, or maybe didn’t even know…  but at one point our little old gym burned down to the ground.  Check out this little video of the entire month from the actual fire, to rebuilding the gym.

On May 9th 2017, the 5th year anniversary of TBI’s inception, we all saw that disappear. The air filled with a thick sense of sadness and hopelessness. Grown adults breaking down in hysterical sobs, the panic, the despair, all while we watched each others hard work go down in flames. A fire ravaged the shopping center where tbi is located. all the business burned down. members rallied to salvage everything during that day, mostly pads were saved. tbi wasn’t fully insured. most everything was lost. homeless for the last three weeks training at mar vista park, while a new location was acquired; needed an astronomical amount of work. tbi members rallied together yet again, completed task in record amount of time, back to training to tbi 2.0: kintsugi. kintsugi? TBI: KINTSUGI. in short; kintsugi is a Japanese technique for repairing broken pottery with seams of gold. applying this technique into a metaphor for what had happened, we finally achieved an end result. Certainly not a complete gym but with some pads and mats on the floor we can continue doing what we love and what brought us together. little by little by the end of the month almost everything will be set back to the way things were; if not even better than before. This is the story of our survival as a gym. ‘this weekend we celebrate the end of our 6 years as a gym. we also celebrate the first year anniversary of our new location as well as the remembrance of our old gym that burned down a year ago. time flies, and as always i am so grateful and thankful of the #tbi community as well as the entire #muaythai community nationwide that donated to our gofundme to rebuild the gym. in less than a month we went from ashes, to mar vista park training, transient gym visits, to demolition and reconstruction of the new space to finally putting mats down and back to training. there is so much more to say (entire blog at the end of the week) and of course i had questions to myself as to whether rebuild or just let the dream die but thinking back to the day where we all stood around and watched the gym burn down in front of our eyes, and how much muay thai changed my life, i knew the decision to keep going was the right one. made a little complilation video of the whole month that can be found on our youtube. give it a watch if your curious about the transformation. Here’s to another year! #tbikintsugi

Arizona USMTO Tournament

View this post on Instagram

well, all done. what can i say.. went one for one this weekend at tbi's first tournament en devour. first time as a coach to manage three different fighters throughout a busy few months of the gym. in the span of 7 weeks we've had illness, injuries, arm breaks and heartbreaks and i'm still hurting over an injury that had to make one of our fighters pull out at the last minute, but as i always say 'c'est la vie' and i know she will come back hungrier and stronger. i can not deny anyone's fighting spirit throughout this whole thing. lee did so well but alas did not proceed past the quarter finals, meanwhile erin had two fights in two days with two different weight cuts in the span of a few days. this was such a great learning experience and ultimately it could have not been done without the help of all the members and awesome community we have here at the gym, as well the awesome team of coaches. many thanks and much love. i'm happy for erin and her performance, but tomorrow back to work and back to another fight camp. see you next year @usmuaythaiopen #vamosTBI #muaythai #nakmuay #kickboxing #muaythailife #muaythaitraining #thaiboxing #boxing #mixedmartialarts #martialarts #marvista #marinadelrey #culvercity #westla #venice #venicebeach #fitness #martialarts #mma
