You’re not just limited to escaping attacks when your opponent moves forward…
We can stave off attacks and counter as we learn punching, while moving backwards.
Learning to punch while moving backwards is a bit of an intermediate concept. When we first learn to strike, typically we are taught how to attack moving forwards.
The next step.. (har har) is learning how to string combinations which follows teaching the athlete the articulation of the limbs to follow a very natural movement.
Left handed strike, left foot steps, right handed strike, right foot steps.*
(*all while adhering to our Muay Thai stance standards, ask a coach for further clarification)
What changes now is moving in an opposite manner.
Left handed strike, right foot steps. Right handed strike, left foot steps. *
Learning to punch while moving backwards is a MUST know. It can be a bit confusing but with practice this will be an invaluable skillset.
Aside from just learning to strike while moving backwards, this will also help you learn how to maintain range and counterattack and play around with another intermediate concept that we talk about quite often which is ’Offense as defense’.
