Party Recap

Thank you to all members, guests, participants, coaches, and everyone else who made the party a success. I appreciate you all being there and a special thank you to everyone who helped clean up afterwards. Hope you had fun—till next year!

TBA’s Update

We had two of our athletes compete this weekend at the Annual TBA World Championship tournaments in beautiful Des Moines, IA.

  • Mher: Making his debut, had three fights in three days and reached the finals on Sunday. Unfortunately, he had to pull out due to food poisoning.
  • Coach Erin: Initially wasn’t going to compete but took a last-minute fight against a heavier opponent and secured a hard-fought win.

Overall, TBI went 4-0 this past weekend with four fights in four days. Thank you to everyone who helped both athletes train and prepare. Proud of the team. Good job, y’all.

What is a PKB? There is a growing movement within the US to establish a competitive scene for both the casual enthusiast as well as a platform for budding athletes to begin their competitive journey. These types of events are usually billed as ‘semi-contact’ and ‘no-knockouts’, worn with protective equipment such as shinguards, head gear, and 16 Oz gloves.

The idea is to use ‘Muay Thai techniques’ to ‘win’ a bout, and not merely rely on punching someone in the head for a KO. Usually done on mats and not in a ring. Sometimes there are day-before weigh-ins, or same-day weigh-ins. Finally, there is a determined ‘winner’ at the end of the bout. Usually 2×2 min rounds, with 1 min breaks, and rounds are judged separately. If there is a draw, the bout goes to a 3rd round.

Although the notion of ‘semi-contact’ seems arbitrary, generally, they are moderated so things don’t get too out of hand. The idea is to provide an arena where one can try and see what competition is like, what it feels like to go up against someone unfamiliar, and the experience of going near 100%. I always tell folks to go in there expecting to be hit at 100%.

Because of this, we will be having a mini fight camp for the event. Make sure you are running 2 miles every other day, minding your diet, and attending all the sparring and wrestling classes your membership allows you to. Any questions, please feel free to ask and talk to me before signing up!

Hygiene Reminder

Summer has arrived, so let’s keep ourselves and our equipment clean and dry. This includes wiping down equipment, changing t-shirts, washing hand wraps, and using clean wraps and gym clothes. Trim your nails and be mindful of cuts and abrasions. If you notice any unusual skin conditions, seek help immediately. Infections can happen, so it’s important to address them promptly by seeing a doctor.

What are Staph Infections on the Skin?

  • Cause: Bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus
  • Types: Boils, impetigo, cellulitis
  • Symptoms: Red, swollen, painful areas; pus-filled blisters; warmth; fever; spreading rash
  • Treatment: See a doctor
  • Prevention: Good hygiene, clean and cover wounds, avoid sharing personal items, shower after physical activity, sanitize surfaces

TBI will be closed from Thursday, July 4th to Sunday, July 7th. Enjoy the holiday, sun, and perhaps the beach!
