About The Thai Boxing Institute

What Is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing, is the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. Developed hundreds of years ago for close-range combat, it uses the entire body as a weapon.

Often referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” Muay Thai incorporates:

  • Punches
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Kicks (shins)

It is a complete striking system that builds coordination, timing, awareness, and resilience—both physically and mentally.

What We Do

Since opening in May 2012, The Thai Boxing Institute has been proud to serve the Mar Vista community as a Muay Thai-focused training facility.

Over time, our program has evolved to include elements of Western boxing and sport-specific conditioning—creating a well-rounded, structured approach to striking.

We work with:

  • Complete beginners
  • Recreational students
  • Competitive athletes

All within the same system.

Coaching & Leadership

The gym is led by head coach and owner Victor Acosta, a six-time amateur Muay Thai champion with nearly 20 years of training experience and over a decade of coaching.

He received his instructor certification from the Muay Thai Academy (MTA) in North Hollywood—one of the oldest traditional Muay Thai schools in the United States.

Our coaching team brings a range of experience and styles, with a shared focus on:

  • Clear instruction
  • Technical development
  • Ongoing growth as coaches and practitioners

Our Approach

At The Thai Boxing Institute, we focus on teaching Muay Thai in a way that is:

  • Structured
  • Practical
  • Progressive

A typical class includes:

  • Warm-up
  • Technique instruction
  • Pad work and partner drills
  • Conditioning
  • Cool down

We emphasize:

  • Proper form and execution
  • Partner awareness and safety
  • Real, applicable technique

Training is challenging, but always approachable and guided.

What Makes Us Different

We are not a “fight gym.” We are a learning environment.

Our goal is to help you build skill and consistency over time—not just get through a workout.

What sets us apart:

Smaller Class Sizes
We limit class sizes so coaches can give real attention and feedback. You won’t get lost in the crowd.

Structured Curriculum
Our monthly curriculum provides direction and progression, so you always know what you’re working on.

Coaching That Teaches
We focus on clear, practical instruction—not random drills or guesswork.

Inclusive Training Environment
No one gets left behind. Whether you’re brand new or experienced, we meet you where you are.

Training Environment

We’ve built a space that is:

  • Welcoming
  • Focused
  • Respectful

You’ll find:

  • Beginners learning alongside experienced members
  • A culture that values effort over ego
  • Coaches who are present and engaged

We take the training seriously—but keep the environment supportive.

Contact & Advanced Training

In addition to technical training, we offer:

  • Sparring classes
  • Clinch classes

All contact training is optional and introduced progressively.
